The “Land of the Eternal Spring” has all the optimum conditions to produce exquisite washed Arabica coffees - mountain ranges, diverse geography and steady rainfall.
This Guatemala Concepción Huista is a prime example of what Guatemalan coffees can be, a sublime mix of clean, sweet and chocolaty flavors with juicy acidity.
Coffee is one of Guatemala’s most important exports and is one of the most popular coffee origins - it’s an ever present component of our Gusto Crema Blend. Guatemala has devised a unique grading system based on altitude, formed around the belief that a higher elevation produces a harder, more dense and therefore higher quality coffee bean. This coffee is graded as Strictly Hard Bean (SHB).
This coffee is produced by the CODECH Cooperative (Coordinadora de Organizaciones de Desarrollo de Concepción Huista), located in a small town in the Sierra De Los Chuchumatanes, the highest mountain range in Central America. Comprised of four base cooperatives, CODECH is well-known for producing some of the best Fair Trade and organic coffee in all of Guatemala. Formed in 1998 to overcome socio-economic challenges, almost 1/3 of the 500 members are women. The Cooperative operates with clear objectives including women’s equity, access to healthcare, professional and technical services, and childhood education. They have implemented a micro-lot program, allowing farmers to sell their coffee at a premium, as well as barista and cupping training programs to educate and involve the youth in the community.
